Maravanthe Beach is a lovely beach on NH 66 in Karnataka’s Udupi district. The beach is situated in a stunning setting, with the Arabian Sea on one side and the Sauparnika River on the other. The beach is well-known for its picturesque beauty, serenity, and breathtaking sunset views.
How to reach Maravanthe Beach?
Location: Maravanthe Beach, NH 66, Trasi, Kundapura Taluk, Udupi District.
Maravanthe Beach is frequented by many onlookers, hence it is not a holiday destination in particular. People passing on National Highway 66 between Kundapura and Byndoor stop their vehicles at the beach for a time and continue their journey while admiring the beauty of the sea.
It is 50 kilometers from Udupi and 110 kilometers from Mangalore. Buses go frequently between Kundapura and Bhatkal. If somebody wants to go to the beach, they can get off at Trasi and the beach is only a kilometre away.
What makes this beach unique?
At delta points, we usually see the sea on one side of the road and the river on the other. The same sight may be seen in Maravanthe beach, but there is no nearby delta point. The Souparnika River, which flows from the Western Ghats, comes extremely close to the sea before doing a U-turn and joining sea at Kundapura which is almost 15 km away from this place.
This unique combination of the sea on one side and the river on the other side of the NH 66 distinguishes it as a remarkable beach. This sight is not found anywhere else in India. Also, the beach boasts a long stretch of coastline that is perfect for long walks, jogging, sunbathing or just relaxing.
Sometimes calm and sometimes fierce
Most of the time, the sea is calm. However, during the rainy season and during extreme weather conditions, the sea gets extremely turbulent. There have been instances where water from large sea waves has flowed across the road. So, to avoid sea erosion, huge stones have been placed along the sea.
It is a common sight for people who come to see the sea to stand on these rocks and take photos and selfies. But swimming here is very dangerous. Hence swimming at this beach is strictly prohibited.
The Maharaja Swamy or Maraswamy Temple
The Maravanthe beach gets its name from the Maraswamy or Maharajaswamy Shri Varaha temple located here. The temple is located on the opposite side of the road from the beach, on the banks of the Souparnika River. The sanctum sanctorum of this temple is notable for housing three idols of God. Vishnu’s avatars Varaha and Narasimha, as well as Vishnu himself, are worshipped here.
Boating and kayaking in Souparnika River
Local fishermen provide boating and kayaking activities on the Souparnika River. The ideal time to do this adventure would be after rainy season that is from October to May. To take use of this service, simply go to the temple and inquire with the locals.
Boating on the Souparnika River is a beautiful pleasure because you can drive through many Kudru’s. In the native language, a Kudru is simply an island. At the Temple, there is a bridge that links to one of the Kudru. From here, you can observe several Kudurs as well as the beauty of the seashore and the Souparnika River.
There are several restaurants, cafes and street stalls near the beach where you can enjoy food and drinks. The nearby attractions include Kollur Mookambika Temple, Kodachadri Hills, Kodi Beach and Delta Point etc.
Therefore, the next time you’re driving down NH 66 and pass by this beach, don’t forget to pull over and take in the scenery.
