Gadaikallu, also known as Narasimha Gada or Jamalabad Fort, is a 1,800-foot-tall rock hill near Belthangady in the Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka. The term “Gada” refers to border in this context, and the location is rich in cultural and historical value. It is also home to Jamalabad Fort, built by Tipu Sultan in the 18th century. How to reach Gadaikallu

Timings: Morning 6:30 AM to 4 PM. The monument is protected by ASI and Overnight stay is prohibited.

By Air: The nearest airport is Mangalore International Airport (IXE), located approximately 65-70 kilometres from Gadaikallu. From Mangalore Airport, take a taxi to the destination.
By Train: The nearest railway station is Mangalore Central Railway Station (MAQ) or Mangalore Junction (MAJN) which is around 65-70 kilometres from Gadaikallu. After reaching Mangalore by train, you can take a bus or taxi to Belthangady and then proceed to the destination.
By Road: Gadaikallu is around 65 kilometres away from Mangalore. There are frequent direct buses from Mangalore to Belthangady. To get to your destination from Belthangady, take a local cab or an auto-rickshaw. You can also drive straight to Gadaikallu from Mangalore or other neighbouring cities. The roads are generally well-connected, and the Western Ghats provide a picturesque backdrop.
How did we travel: We travelled to Belthangady and stayed overnight. The next morning, we started the hike.
Jamalabad Fort: Tipu Sultan’s Watchtower
Jamalabad Fort was built by Tipu Sultan in 1794 as a strategic watchtower to monitor enemy movements across the Western Ghats. The name “Gadai” refers to border. Named after his mother, Jamal Bee, the fort sits atop a massive granite hill at an elevation of about 1700 feet near Belthangady in Karnataka.
Though much of the fort has fallen into ruins over time, remnants of its past can still be explored. A small room-like structure at the summit, believed to have been part of Tipu’s defensive outpost, offers a glimpse into its historical significance. Apart from that there is a microwave tower at the top a cannon at the bottom of the boulder. Today, the fort is a popular trekking destination, known for its challenging climb up 1800 steps carved into the rock, and offering breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
Trekking: Difficulty and Experience
Trekking Gadaikallu, is an exhilarating yet challenging adventure. The trek involves climbing around 1800 steps carved into the rock, making it a moderately difficult trek that tests endurance and stamina. The ascent, though strenuous, rewards trekkers with panoramic views of the Western Ghats and the lush greenery, especially during the monsoon season.
With an elevation of 1700 feet, the trek takes around 2-3 hours to reach the top, where a small room-like structure and the ruins of the fort greet you. While it may not be suitable for beginners due to the steep incline and rugged terrain, it’s a perfect trek for intermediate-level hikers seeking a blend of history, nature, and adventure. Proper footwear, water, and preparation are recommended for this trek.
Out of 1800 steps, the first 1000 are less steep. The trail leads us around the granite boulder till we reach the bottom of it. The final steps are chiselled into the boulder and are very steep.
We went to Gadaikallu in the beginning of June. The rainy season had not yet begun, and the temperature was quite high. We started trekking at 6:30 AM. We made it to the top in two hours and explored the terrain for about an hour. The sun was overhead, making the descent extremely exhausting. Due to the severe heat, our energy was nearly exhausted.
Do’s and Don’ts for the Gadaikallu Trek
Do’s:
- Carry a First Aid Kit: Since Gadayikallu is an unmanned region with no immediate medical facilities, it’s essential to carry a first aid kit with basic medicines, bandages, and antiseptics.
- Stay Hydrated: Bring plenty of water as there are no water sources on the way to the top. Dehydration can be an issue, especially during warmer months.
- Wear Proper Footwear: The steep steps and rocky terrain require sturdy, comfortable trekking shoes for grip and ankle support.
- Start Early: Begin the trek early in the morning to avoid the midday heat and have ample daylight to explore.
- Trek in Groups: It’s safer to trek in a group due to the remoteness of the region. Solo trekking is not recommended.
- Check the Weather: Gadayikallu is best visited in dry weather. The monsoon season makes the trek more slippery and challenging, so plan accordingly.
- Pack Light but Smart: Carry essentials like snacks, a rain jacket, a flashlight, and sunscreen to prepare for different weather conditions.
- Respect Nature: Ensure you carry a trash bag and leave no litter behind. Help preserve the natural beauty of the area.

- Don’t Trek After Dark: However the overnight stay is prohibited at this loction. Without proper lighting and safety services, trekking after dark can be risky. Ensure you complete your descent before sunset.
- Don’t Rely on Mobile Networks: Cell phone reception can be unreliable in the area, so inform someone of your trekking plans before starting.
- Avoid Alcohol or Drugs: Intoxication can impair judgment and coordination, making the trek more dangerous.
