Apsara Konda is a popular tourist destination located in Honnavara, a coastal town in the Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka. It is known for its pristine beaches, mesmerizing waterfalls, and scenic beauty. The name ‘Apsara Konda’ means the pond of angels. The place is surrounded by lush green forests and cliffs, offering a picturesque view of the Arabian Sea.
How to reach Apsara Konda?
Apsara Konda is just 8 km from Honnavara bus stand. There are two ways to reach this place. First one is a narrow path. By this route one can reach the pond by climbing the stairs from near the beach. Another route which is just 50 meters from National Highway 66.
Location: Apsara Konda, Honnavara Taluk, Uttara Kannada District, Karnataka
Timings: 6 AM to 6 PM. Rainy season (June – October) is a good time. You can see the water flowing well in the waterfall.
You can use the following options to reach Honnavara.
By Air: Honnavara has no airport in its vicinity, still you can reach nearest airport Mangalore (IXE, 180 km) or Hubli (HBX, 190 km) and from there you can reach Honnavara by cab or bus.
By Train: There is a railway station at Karki in Honnavara and many trains of Konkan Railway reach Honnavara. The waterfall is just 20 km from the railway station.
By Road: Many buses of Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) connect to Honnavara. Also, there are many private buses that run every 5 minutes. As National Highway 66 is a four-lane highway, coming by private vehicle is also a good option.
An Amazing 50 feet Waterfall of Angels:
The main attraction of Apsarakonda is the natural waterfall, which is formed by a small stream flowing through the lush green forest. The word Apsara in Kannada means Angels. It is believed that long ago angels used to come here and do water sports. That is why this place is called “Apsara Konda”. This is a waterfall that falls from a height of about 50 feet in the middle of the surrounding forest.
From the rainy season till the month of March, water keeps falling from the falls. It is a small pond that is not dangerous at all and is a very good tourist destination to spend time with family and friends.
Well maintained Marine Park:
After spending some quality time at Apsarakonda climb up the stairs and come to the other side. A beautiful and well maintained Marine park is set up. One can see flower plants, fruit and medicinal trees along the way. Walk forward listening to the chirping of birds in the middle of the green forest. A rest area has been built here to take rest and seating arrangements are also available. There is a viewpoint here from where you can see the green fields, Arabian sea and the beach. The view of the beach from this viewpoint is breathtaking.
Moving forward from here, life size statues of animals and aquatic animals have been installed here and there to make the park even more beautiful. From a distance, it feels like a real animal is standing. If you bring your children, along with the games, you can also teach and give them lessons on living things. This park is maintained by the forest department of Honnavara region.
Calm and serene Apsarakonda Beach
If you come down the stairs from Marine Park, you will find Apsarakonda Beach. Apsarakonda beach of Honnavara is very beautiful beach, calm has and has no pollution. Watching the evening sunset from this beach is very pleasing to both the mind and eyes. People come here to do photo shoots on this beach and is always full of tourists. There is also a park next to the beach and inside the park there are seatings and swings slides for the kids to play. One can enjoy a leisurely walk on the beach or take a dip in the clear blue water of the Arabian Sea.
Apsarakonda is also known for its Shiva temple, which is believed to be over 400 years old. The temple is located on top of a hill and offers a panoramic view of the surrounding areas.
